Contact us at Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Education

At Lagganlia centre we are committed to providing quality outdoor learning and self catering experiences whilst minimising the environmental impact of our activities. We aim to demonstrate sustainability to our guests by our practices and by including practical work around environmental education and sustainability in all our outdoor education courses.

We are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and are delighted to have achieved the Silver Award. By promoting sustainable practices this scheme helps ensure the continued enjoyment of the beautiful environment around us all for future generations.
At Lagganlia we have been delivering environmental education for over 20 years. We have lots of major environmental projects that we would like to undertake when we can and there is much we can all do in terms of minor projects and raising awareness and we intend to work on this over the next few years.

Currently we comply with all relevant environmental legislation. We have listed below how we strive to reduce waste, pollution, carbon impact and environmental impact.

  • 75% of our electricity comes from a green source.
  • We use low-energy light bulbs as replacements when any of our bulbs fail.
  • We recycle all our cardboard, paper, cans, plastic bottles and glass and request that all visiting groups sort their refuse and recycle all these items using the bins provided.
  • We only change bedding once a week.
  • We strive to make efficient use of paper using e-resources whenever possible including for marketing materials.
  • We have reduced the portion sizes served to visiting the school groups to reduce food waste - extra portions are only available on request.
  • We endeavour to organise our programmes to minimalise the use of our minibuses.
  • All unclaimed clothing etc is recycled through our local charity shops.
  • We do not use pesticide or other chemicals harmful to local wildlife on our site.
  • We encourage wildlife within the grounds.
  • We have planted over 200 native species trees and plan to plant more.
  • We provide RSPB approved feeding stations and nest sites throughout our site.
  • We encourage sustainable tourism by provision for walkers and cyclists.

We have a Green Team who work achieve the Centre’s Green Action Plan - visiting groups/guests can help the team’s work by:

    • Sorting refuse and placing in the correct containers (ie recycling and landfill).
    • Keeping the environment litter free and following the Countryside Code.
    • Bringing eco-friendly washing/dishwashing liquids etc with them when they come to stay on a self-catering basis.
    • Switching off lights and heating or turning down heating whenever they can.
    • Using their cars as little as possible - walking and cycling instead.
    • Supporting local producers, eating places and visiting local tourist attractions and events.
